In one of my private prayer moments, I got an inspiration to use music for our homeschooling. I ran this idea by my husband and spiritual director. And, since they did not verbally disagree, they have no clue on how this will work.
One morning, I got my adult piano books and I told my 14 year old son to read through a unit and see if he can self-study this. I also told him that he may be surprised but he will be more predisposed to studying his math course (Algebra) after this piano practice session. Thus, I corrected him and guided him through the lesson. Not only did he sounded good, he also finished his math lessons quicker than normal.
And so continued our piano lesson journey. After breakfast, I would let him practice his piano lessons for an hour then I would let him proceed to his math course.

Piano lessons first! What a great idea! I’m a piano teacher and a homeschooler, so I should be able to pull this off. Thanks for the idea!
In fact, when I was not yet homeschooling, my then 5th grader would have piano lessons with me for 30 minutes every day before going to public school at around 7:30 am. He really did well in school and he enjoys playing the piano now. I also had students who wanted to quit piano lessons. So what I did was to switch their time to an early morning session. It worked. I was able to pull back their interest.
Awesome! I’ve never considered teaching before school before.
Before I studied in the Conservatory, the only available time of the Professor for coaching was at around 7 am. So my Dad would drive me to this lesson. I really cannot pinpoint exactly what happened to my brains but I performed better in school.
That is such a great technique. I’ve always heard that music helps with academics, especially math. Can’t wait to try it. My son is pretty good at math already, for a second-grader, but he needs to memorize his math facts yet. I haven’t figured out an efficient way to do this. Maybe I should play piano in the mornings too, to inspire the rest of my day! It’s so great that your dad was dedicated enough to get you to early morning lessons!
